The history of Sandacres starts over 115 years ago. The house was originally built by the Craig family of Quogue in 1884 from a design by Sanford White. Shortly after its completion, the house was sold to Mr. Robert Colgate, and was eventually inherited by his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. & Mrs. Vernon Mann. Their family enjoyed more than 20 summers at what became know as "Sandacres Farm," and the house was the subject of a popular book, "Ellie at Sandacres," which was written by one of the Mann's gradchildren.
Following the death of Mr. Mann, the property was purchased by Herbert F. and Mary P. Eggert of New York. A successful broker in the marine insurance industry, Mr. Eggert was to become Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Marsh and McLennan Companies. Sandacres was to be his family's summer residence. Today the house is enjoyed by several generations of the Eggert Family, as was intended. |
